What Is Sub Ohm Vaping?
Sub-Ohm is the name of the style of vaping which produces large, thick clouds of vapour and this is done by using a vape kit that utilises a coil with a low ohm resistance, hence the name "sub-ohm" as it's below/sub 1.0 ohm.
Sub ohm vaping is also known as direct to lung/DTL vaping, as it requires you to inhale the vapour direct to lung, rather than mouth to lung because of the amount of vapour produced from a sub ohm vape kit/vape coil would be impossible to do mouth to lung (MTL) vaping with.
This is why sub ohm vaping is more recommended to vapers who are experienced and may not require a high nicotine content vape juice and to replicate the effects of smoking which MTL vaping does.
What Are The Benefits of Sub-Ohm Vaping?
There are several benefits to sub-ohm vaping and we'll list them below as well as giving an explanation why we feel that they count as a benefit.
Sub-Ohm Vaping Produces Thick Clouds Of Vapour
If you're a bit of a "cloud chaser" and want to produce the biggest clouds possible to exhale, then sub-ohm vaping does just this! Whilst it's not everyones cup of tea, some do enjoy producing plumes of vape clouds when they exhale, and sub-ohm vaping is perfect for this due to the high wattage from the vape kit as well as the low ohm resistance coil that's used in the vape tank or vape pod.
More Flavour From Your Vape Juice
And it's not just more clouds that are produced with sub-ohm vaping, it also heightens the flavour of the vape juice as well. This is down to the high wattage, low ohm resistance coil and the High VG vape juice used. More on the best vape juice to use for sub-ohm vaping a little further on in this blog.
More Choice For Customised Vape Experience
Sub-ohm vaping offers more choice when it comes to tailoring things to your personal preference for a great vaping experience with options like adjustable airflow and variable wattage so you can tailor your vape.
There's normally a wide range of different ohm resistance coils which are compatible with your vape tank or vape pod and you can even move into the world of rebuildable coils to be used with sub-ohm vape kits.
What Vape Juice To Use For Sub Ohm Vaping
The best vape juice to use for a true sub-ohm vape experience is one that has a higher vegetable glycerine (VG) content than propylene glycol (PG) ratio with the common ratio being either 70/30 or 80/20.
VG is the thicker of the two used in a vape juice base mix, and it holds many different properties. Most notably, it enhances the flavour of the concentrates which are used in the vape juice, as well as being the ingredient which aids in producing vape clouds. So the higher the VG content, the thicker the vape clouds and the bigger the flavour too!
As High VG vape juice is thicker than standard 50-50 vape juice, it does require a higher temperature from the vape coil to be heated up to optimal temperature so that vape juice can turn into vape cloud to be inhaled and exhaled. Because of the high wattages required to heat the vape juice up, it's recommended that a low nicotine strength is used, as to not give a massive nicotine rush from the high powered vape kit.
We have several ranges of High VG vape juice available to buy from our online vape shop. Our 10ml High VG range is available in 3 different nicotine strengths, with many flavours to choose from. Or if you're looking for more value for money when it comes to vape juice, we'd recommend trying our Shortfill ranges of High VG vape juice.
We have 50ml shortfills which are 75ml bottles, shortfilled with 50ml of vape juice to allow for up to 2 10ml nicotine shots to be added in, and we've just launched our 100ml High VG shortfills, which are 120ml bottles, shortfilled with 100ml vape juice, leaving enough space to get 2 10ml nicotine shots in to make a 3mg nicotine strength.
What Vape Kit To Use For Sub-Ohm Vaping
As we mentioned above, to properly sub ohm vape, you're going to need a vape kit capable of running at high wattages as well as using lower/sub ohm vape coils.
Sub ohm vaping has evolved quite considerably over the years, as previously it was only associated with vape kits which were unregulated/mechanical meaning they had no safety features such as a power chip or safety cut-off abilities and using these kind of vape kits required a substantial knowledge of ohm's law and battery safety...scary stuff!
But in this modern era of vaping that we're in, there's vape kits on the market that are safe to use, and the smart chip inside the device does everything for you, meaning you can try out sub-ohm vaping without the risk of causing serious harm to yourself using an unregulated device.
When looking for a sub ohm vape kit, you'll want to make sure that they meet the specific criteria related for sub ohm vaping, and that's using lower ohm coils and also able to be ran at a high wattages to achieve those big clouds of vapour you desire.
Previously, sub ohm vaping was only associated with big, chunky box style vape mods that required external batteries to power it up, but as technology has advanced, you can now get refillable pod vape kits which double up as a sub ohm vape kit!
The Vaporesso Xros Pro is a pen style pod vape kit that has variable wattage features as well as using replacement pods that have sub ohm coils pre-installed in them. The replacement pods which are specifically designed for use with the Xros Pro use 0.4ohm coils, and you can set the devices wattage output to 30 watts for a sub ohm vape experience.
If you're looking for a more traditional vape mod for your sub ohm vaping, then we would recommend the brilliant Voopoo Drag E60. Whilst this does use refillable pods, the coils are replaceable rather than the whole pod, and the device is in a box style mod shape, powered by an impressive 2550mah battery means it can be ramped up to 60 watts, and paired with a 0.15ohm coil will give an immense sub ohm vape experience full of big flavour and even bigger clouds!
How Do You Sub Ohm Vape?
As we have explained above, sub ohm vaping is most commonly associated with the style of vaping called "direct to lung" vaping.
To do this correctly, you must inhale the vapour produced from your sub ohm vape kit directly down to your lungs and then exhale the vapour. This differs from traditional mouth to lung vaping as you don't inhale the vapour and let it hit the back of your throat. If you did try this, chances are you're going to make yourself cough and not have a pleasant vaping experience.
We've explained everything you need to know about how to inhale a vape properly in our handy guide that explains all techniques, including restricted direct to lung, mouth to lung and of course direct to lung.
What Are The Disadvantages of Sub Ohm Vaping?
Whilst there are advantages to sub ohm vaping, there are also some disadvantages too which we will explain below;
You'll Use More E-Liquid
As your sub ohm vape kit will be operating at higher wattages, you may find that you'll be using more vape juice compared to what you would use if you used a lower powered vape device. This is because it will be heated up from your coil at higher temperatures thus resulting in more e-liquid being used.
Coils May Not Last As Long
Unfortunately, there isn't anything (yet) such as an everlasting coil and they do eventually burn out and need replacing. This comes down to the cotton within the coil detoriating over time the more that it's heated up from the power of the battery. And if you're using your device at higher wattages to sub ohm vape, you may find that your coils don't last as long. This is because the power is causing the cotton to burn away quicker and you might only get 5-7 days out of a sub ohm vape coil compared to 7-10 days of a normal MTL vape coil.
More To Understand
Sub ohm vaping isn't for beginners, and does require some knowledge and experience of vaping which can be a disadvantage if you're new to vaping and want to create the big plumes of vape clouds and get huge flavour from the vape juice you're using.
Whilst it isn't overly complicated and you don't have to understand Omh's law and battery safety as you're not using mechanical devices, there is still a level of knowledge required to know what nicotine strength you should use, what wattage you should set your vape device to and know how to properly vape when using a sub ohm vape kit.
