The History and Evolution of Nicotine Pouches
Oral nicotine products have been around a lot longer than you may realise, with the first inception spanning right back to the 17th century!
Over the centuries, there's been significant advancement in the production and marketing of oral nicotine products which has produced the brands of Nicotine Pouches sold on the market today and that are globally known brands.
We take a look at the history of nicotine pouches, taking a deep dive into everything about them as well as showcasing the latest product added to our catalogue...LiQuid Nicotine Pouches!
A Brief History Of Snus
Snus (pronounced Snoose) originates from Sweden, and the first inception of it dates right back to the 1800s when it was first designed exclusively for use by Swedish royalty.
Loose leaf moist tobacco was put into small pouches to offer the Swedish Royals a smoke free alternative for tobacco and nicotine consumption which could be used at their discretion.
It wasn't until the 1970s that the use of Snus pouches became more frequent within society with different companies emerging and offering their own versions of moist tobacco pouches to the general public.

However it wasn't long before concerns started being raised over the health risks that Snus pouches could pose due to the fact they contained tobacco leaf as well as carcinogens which can lead to serious health conditions such as cancer.
An EU-wide ban on Snus was initiated in 1992 due to health concerns combined with the dislike of aggressive marketing techniques from a specific brand of Snus and they still remain banned to this day.
This ban opened a gap in the market however for the creation of another oral nicotine product which doesn't involve tobacco...
How Snus Helped Create Nicotine Pouches
Despite there being a gap in the market, it wasn't until 2008 when the first nicotine pouch brand was registered (a brand called Zonnic) but they had been in production since the early 2000s by a brand called Niconovum.
This brand had previously created and marketed Nicotine Replacement Therapy products such as nicotine lozenges and nicotine gums to aid smokers in their quest of quitting cigarettes.
It was quite clear to see when looking at nicotine pouches that they had been inspired by Snus pouches in the way they shared the same small sleek pouch design, but obviously nicotine pouches only contained powdered nicotine and were made to be tobacco-free. You can learn more about the differences between snus and nic pouches inour blog!
How Nicotine Pouches Have Evolved Into What They Are Today
After seeing the first year success of Niconovum and the 'Zonnic' brand, RJ Reynolds, otherwise known as British American Tobacco, acquired ownership of Niconovum in 2009 and this is where the market for nicotine pouches really began to flourish.
The Scandinavian born product began being pushed out onto the global market and it wasn't long before another big tobacco company got involved and Philip Morris International acquired Swedish Match, an already established brand and manufacture of nicotine pouches. And it was from this that the brand Zyn was launched which saw incredible market growth mainly in the USA, whilst also being introduced to Europe also.
Snus & Nicotine Pouch Usage Leads To Success Rate in Sweden
Sweden are renowned worldwide for their success in the quest to achieve "smoke free" status. To do this, it means that 5% or less of the countries population are users of combustible tobacco products.
And in 2024, it was announced that Sweden had finally achieved their goal of reaching smoke free status, something which they should be very proud of as it's been a long time coming for them!
To put this in to context, sixty years ago, 49% of Swedish men smoked cigarettes meaning they've chipped away gradually over the years and dropped the smoking rate down to almost 10% of what it was 60 years ago!
This hasn't been done without hard work though, and Sweden have tirelessly worked to create awareness and promoting smokeless tobacco products in their country as alternatives for smokers to use to help them kick cigarettes to the curb once and for all. To quote Smoke Free Sweden's publication;
"It's successful reduction in smoking rates over the years has been facilitated by education, tobacco control measures and the adoption of safer, smokeless alternatives."
Snus obviously lead the way as the first smokeless alternative, which was then followed by e-cigarettes in 2015 and finally nicotine pouches joined the fray in 2018 and this only further accelerated the progress for Sweden to reach their goal of smoke free status.
