LiQuid title - E-liquid vs Nic Salt: what's the difference and which should you buy?

E-Liquid vs Nic Salt: What's The Difference and Which Should You Buy?

Where freebase e-liquid provides a more balanced flavour and is the main type of e-liquid associated with vaping, nic salts are created from naturally occurring salts found in tobacco leaves. Nic salts provide a stronger flavour, often associated with disposable vape devices.

In this blog, we will provide guidance on choosing the best e-liquid for your personal preference.

Should I Vape E-Liquid or Nic Salts?

If you enjoy a throat hit, balanced flavour profiles, and a gentler overall nicotine hit, freebase e-liquid is likely best for you.

If you prefer little-to-no throat hit, double-concentrated flavours, and a fast-acting & longer-lasting nicotine hit, you may prefer nic salt e-liquid.

Recent ex-smokers may prefer freebase e-liquid, like our original £1 range, due to it being made to replicate the experience of smoking cigarettes more closely, largely due to the throat hit delivered by freebase nicotine.

Users of disposable vapes, or people who enjoy more flavour impact will enjoy nic salt vape juice due to its enhanced taste, whilst still providing a strong nicotine hit. Despite their typically high nicotine strength, nic salts have a much smoother throat hit, which may or may not be preferable depending on what kind of vaping experience you enjoy.

What is an E-Liquid?

Also known as "vape liquid" or "vape juice", e-liquid is the umbrella term encompassing the liquid used within your vape device. Types of e-liquid include 50/50 freebase, high VG and nic salts (also commonly known as "bar salts" or "bar juice").

E-liquids are commonly created from propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerol (VG), nicotine and flavourings. These four main ingredients are combined in varying amounts to create different types of vape juice. There are also examples without certain ingredients such as flavourless and nicotine free e-liquids.

What Ingredients are in Normal E-Liquid

Normal e-liquid contains freebase nicotine, which is created from 100% concentrated nicotine, diluted down and suspended within PG used in e-liquids. Nicotine molecules are freely suspended in the base PG, thus coining the name ‘freebase’. PG is an excellent carrier for other ingredients like nicotine or flavourings, meaning we can accurately mix a wide range of stable nicotine strengths and vape flavours.

VG in e-liquid is responsible for most of the vapour production. If you notice a vaper producing large clouds when, there’s a good chance they’re using a high VG vape liquid. It emphasises flavour by increasing vapour production and mixes well with PG, to create 50/50 freebase e-liquid, (50/50 being the PG/VG ratio,) the most widely used type of vape juice.

What is in Nic Salt Vape Juice?

Nic salts contain largely the same ingredients as normal e-liquid, with the exception of the flavourings being double-concentrated in modern products like our Bar Salts range. The key difference is in the nicotine used. Unlike freebase, salt nicotine is modified to have a neutral pH and faster absorption, managing cravings more efficiently.

Due to having a neutral pH, nic salt vapers will notice barely any throat hit compared to freebase nicotine, even at higher nicotine concentrations like 20mg. This may or may not be preferable, depending on whether you enjoyed the throat hit from smoking, or prefer a smoother vaping experience. Nic salts offer a much faster hit than freebase, which may be preferable or too intense subjectively.

Key Differences Between E-Liquid & Nic Salts

We've summarised all key differences in the following bulleted list; further on we will explore these differences in more detail.

Strawberry freebase e-liquid by LiQuid

E-Liquid

  • Offers more flexibility in nicotine strength, at 0, 3, 6, 12 and 18mg concentration
  • More throat hit - comparable to cigarettes
  • More flavour options available
  • Most affordable from our range at only £1 for 10ml
Sour Apple Ice Bar Salts by LiQuid

Nicotine Salts

  • Nicotine strengths in increments of 5 from 5, 10, 15 and 20mg
  • Little to no throat hit - similar to disposable vapes
  • Double-concentrated flavour
  • Throat hit difference is not noticable or largely different across nicotine strengths
  • Slightly more expensive than freebase, but still affordable at £2 for 10ml
Choosing Your E-Liquid Strength

What Nicotine Strength Should I Use For Freebase E-Liquid?

Freebase e-liquids, like our original £1 range, are typically available in a tapered range of nicotine strengths ranging from 0mg nicotine free through 3mg, 6mg and 12mg up to a maximum of 18mg. The throat hit intensity of these vape juices increases with the nicotine content, as does their ability to satisfy increasingly powerful cravings.

This trade-off may be considered a negative of freebase e-liquid, as those who want a smoother vape may not be able to access the higher nicotine strengths needed due to the intensity of the hit. On the other hand, many vapers (particularly heavier former smokers) value the throat hit as it's a familiarity.

What Nicotine Strength Should I Use For Nic Salts?

Nic salt e-liquids, like our Bar salts range, are available in 5mg, 10mg, 15mg and 20mg nicotine strengths. The main reason for not following the same increments as freebase vape juice is due to the popularity of disposable vapes, which were mostly available in either 10mg or 20mg nic salt strengths, which meant vapers simply became more familiar with this scale when shopping for nic salts. To a lesser extent, the way nicotine salts interact with our body also contributes to their doses being on a slightly different scale to freebase vape juice.

Nic salt vape juice has little to no throat hit even at the highest strengths available, which offers a unique solution to vapers who seek high-strength craving satisfaction, but do not want a throat hit. As with freebase, the flipside of this positive is that vapers who want the familiarity of a throat hit from their previous smoking habits will not find it when vaping nic salts.

Choosing Your Strength

Is E-Liquid Stronger Than Nic Salts?

When using nic salts, you'll notice a more immediate nicotine hit due to quicker absorption into the bloodstream when compared to freebase nicotine. This can make nic salt e-liquids feel stronger than freebase examples, even at a lower nicotine strength.

When deciding which product you should buy, rather than objective strength, you should consider whether you prefer a more intense, faster-acting nicotine hit that lasts a little longer, or a gentler freebase nicotine hit that may not last as long but has other potential benefits like a throat hit.

PG/VG Ratio

Does Freebase Produce Large Clouds?

If you prefer high vapour production, high-VG freebase e-liquids are the best option for large clouds. 50-50 e-liquids, freebase or otherwise, simply cannot compete with the vapour production of high-VG products. This is because VG is the ingredient responsible for vapour production, so the higher the VG content, the bigger the clouds.

Nicotine salts typically don't provide a notably large amount of vapour, as they are also mixed to a balanced 50/50 ratio of PG & VG.

Choosing The Right Product

How Much is Freebase E-Liquid & Do Nic Salts Cost More?

Freebase e-liquid is, more often than not, cheaper than nic salts from most vape stores. This includes our LiQuid online vape store, where our freebase 10ml liquids are £1, and 10ml Bar Salts are £2 (still significantly cheaper than competing nic salt brands, which sell for circa £4.99 per 10ml).

The primary reason for this difference in price is that modern nic salt e-liquids use more concentrated flavourings, which are one of the most expensive ingredients. Salt nicotine is also more costly to produce than freebase, which also contributes to the price increase.

Why is Freebase Cheaper?

Freebase e-liquid has milder flavouring and less nicotine processing requirements, making it cheaper to produce and sell overall.

E-Liquid vs Shortfill

If you're leaning towards nic salts or nicotine free vaping with the flavour of disposables, bar juice shortfills may be ideal for you. Although sold at a higher price than 10ml ranges, shortfills provide a larger volume of vape liquid and can be cheaper overall. If you do decide to try shortfill e-liquids with nicotine, you will need to add nic shots or nic salt shots – giving you the freedom to choose a freebase or nic salt style shortfill vaping experience.

Shortfill options also cover HVG e-liquid, with some of LiQuid's popular HVG flavours available in 50 and 100ml shortfill bottles.

If you've found a double-concentrated nic salt flavour you enjoy, it's certainly worth considering a Bar Salt flavour shortfill e-liquid to get more of what you love for less.

What Vape Kits Are Best for Freebase Vape Juice?

Most, if not all vape kits in our range have been designed to work with freebase 50/50 vape juice, as it's the most frequently used amongst vapers. Any vape kit with a coil rated at 1.0ohm or above will pair well with freebase 50-50 e-liquids.

If using a high-VG freebase e-liquid, a sub-ohm vape kit with a coil rated at 0.9ohm or below will be better as they are designed to handle their extra-thick viscosity.

For example, the following vape kits will work brilliantly with freebase e-liquids:
