What is a Pod Vape and How Do They Work?

Since they entered the vaping scene in 2017, pod vapes have boomed in popularity amongst vapers, especially after the ban of disposable vape devices. Among the types of devices, such as pen and mod kits, pod kits are the easiest to pick up and start vaping with, due to their simple approach and ease of changing e-liquid and device parts. In this blog, we will guide you through what a pod kit is and whether it is the best type of vape device for your vaping journey.

What is a Pod Vape Kit?

Pod vape kits are a type of vape device that utilise a refillable pod instead of a tank, which are typically found in pen kits. The pod is refillable and essentially works as an ‘all-in-one’ device, provided the coil and tank are implemented into the same device, removing the extra steps required to change parts from a pen kit.

Pod vapes are currently booming in the market due to their simplicity, efficiency and similarity to disposable vapes in their features and appearance. Most pod vapes are convenient due to their lightweight, sleek size and appearance, as well as their range of features from beginner-friendly to advanced.

The Parts of a Pod Vape Kit Explained

Pod vapes will always contain a battery and pod as their main components, but can also include extra features such as buttons, airflow valves and in recent models a display screen.

We will go further into these components below. For reference we've also provided an example of a pod kit, with the external features highlighted.

Button

Pod vapes can be activated by button, draw or sometimes both. Meaning you either hold the button or simply breathe through the mouthpiece to use the vape.

Airflow Valve

Some devices feature an airflow valve, which can be found on the front, side or back of the device. This enables the user to change between vaping styles according to their preferences.

Device Screen

Some devices have a screen with settings such as battery percentage and wattage.

Pod & Coil

This section of the pod features your coil. It can be made of either plastic or glass, allowing e-liquid to be inserted and heated up for vaping.

Battery

The battery enables your e-liquid to be heated by the coil, connected through the pod itself. Batteries come in different sizes and strengths, measured in millampere per hour ratings (mAh), with more entry level vapes usually having a lower rating, and high-tech vapes can have around a 2,000 mAh battery!

Pod/Coil

The pod itself, though small, features a tank for the e-liquid to be poured into and held, as well as a coil. The coil itself houses a wicking port. This port contains the wicking material and the wick itself. The wicking material absorbs e-liquid inside your pod, which is where the taste of your e-liquid comes from. The wick is made from wire mesh, which heats up through your vape device’s battery and subsequently heats the surrounding e-liquid, vaporising it and allowing you to inhale and exhale it smoothly.

Pod Vape E-Liquid Compatibility

Pod kits will typically perform best with 50-50 freebase or nic salt vape juice, though they do have the capacity to handle high-VG e-liquid if they’re compatible with sub-ohm vaping and have an appropriate sub-ohm resistance coil. You can refer to our guide, which covers resistance and e-liquid compatibility further.

Are Pod Vape Kits Right For You?

With many of the top vape brands focussing on developing the best and most applicable pod kits across every level of vaping, it would be difficult to find a pod kit that isn’t applicable to most vapers. For example, if you’ve started vaping through using disposables, pod kits will be the closest approach to this style, particularly when used with RDTL coils and nic salts.

Choosing a Pod Vape Kit to Match Your Experience Level

Experience level has been mentioned throughout this blog and it is an important thing to consider when choosing a device. Luckily, most pod vape kits are applicable to entry-level vapers, though there are certainly options for both new and experienced vapers.

Below, we will explore some of the best pod vape kits available from our store that appeal to different experience levels so you can see the differences for yourself:

How Pod Vape Kits Compare to Other Devices

Pod Vapes vs Pen Style Vapes

Ultimately, pod and pen style vape kits can serve the same purpose, and many long-time vapers who began with pen kits still prefer them. The main benefit with pod kits is their efficiency, removing the extra step of having to manually install your vape coil into your pen kit on every refill (which is included within the pod itself in pod kits).

Although some pen kits support DTL or RDTL vaping styles, most are designed with MTL vaping style in mind, meaning they're mostly applicable with freebase nicotine.

Pod Vapes vs Mod Style Vape Kits

Mod kits are mostly used by experienced vapers due to their technical design and features. Whilst more features may sound better and like it provides more value for money initially, the benefit of pod kits is that they’re readily equipped for use by anyone of any vaping level, straight out of the box.

We would recommend mod-style vape kits only for more experienced vapers, and ultimately, especially with more modern pod kits, many have a wide variety of features that set them apart from any other kit.

Conclusion: Pod Vape Kits Are a Versatile Option That Can Support Any Vaping Preference

Pod vape kits are currently the most popular type of vape kit for good reason - they're efficient, easy to use for new vapers and have the capacity to be modified to the extent where experienced vapers can use them without feeling restricted. Whether you want a device with high wattage, extra features and adjustable airflow, or a simple draw-activated device for nic salt vaping, pod kits offer a wide range of options.
