What Are The Main Parts Of A Vape Kit?

We're going to start our guide to vape kits off by breaking down a typical vape kit and looking at each of the components that they commonly share, and explain each part in depth to give you a clear understanding of what roles they play in making a vape kit function.

Battery - Arguably the most important part of any vape kit is the battery as this is what powers the device and enables it to function. Most of the popular vape devices on the market today, notably refillable pod kits, have an internal battery which is charged via the USB port located on the device.

Some devices have external batteries however, which have to be charged outside of the device with a battery charger to ensure safety and lifespan. It is sometimes possible to charge them while they are in the device via a standard cable, however this often causes them to degrade faster, and can pose safety issues. External batteries are more commonly associatied with bigger sub-ohm vape kits as they require a lot more power to operate at a higher wattage, and internal batteries cannot give this hence the need for external batteries.

Coil - Probably the second most important part of a vape kit is the coil. This is to a vape what the heart is to a human body, if it's not looked after properly, your vape isn't going to function effectively!

The role of a coil is to heat up your vape juice as the current from the battery passes through it, turning it into a vapour for you to inhale and exhale to get your nicotine fix, unless using nicotine free vape juice. Coils come in various different ohms (the unit of electrical resistance) to suit different power settings, vaping styles and e-liquid preferenceswhich we explain more about further on in this guide.

Most coils come wih their ohm rating written on them clearly to help guide you, but a basic understanding of what these numbers mean will help you tailor your experience more accurately.

Tank/Pod - This is where your coil is housed and it's also the vessel you fill up with your vape juice of choice. Most modern vape pods will have coils pre-installed in them, meaning when the coil has burnt out you just replace the entire pod itself.

Some pods use replaceable coils however, as do all vape tanks. Make sure you read up on what you need when buying a vape kit so that you don't have any problems when it comes to replacing your pods/coils.

What Are The Different Types Of Vape Kit?

There are a few different types of vape kit available to buy, and knowing which is which and what they do can feel confusing, especially if you are new to vaping. We've picked out four of the most common vape kits you are likely to find in stores and online and explained them in detail below.

Pen Vape Kit

One of the easiest and simple to use vape devices that are currently on the market and one we would recommend to anyone who is new to vaping!

They're commonly referred to as an AIO (All in One) device as there's no seperate tanks or pods which are attached to the battery. The device automatically sets the wattage (power) output based on which coil is being used meaning you don't have to get your head round complex features such as changing your wattage output and understanding ohms and volts.

We would recommend the Aspire PockeX if you're looking for the best pen vape kit out there!

Pod Vape Kit

A slight step up from a pen vape kit is a refillable pod vape kit! There are different refillable pod vape kits out there to cater to all levels of vaping experience. You can get a simple and easy to use pod vape kit that doesn't have adjustable wattage like the Innokin Kylpse which is pictured.

Or you can get a more intermediate pod vape kit which has adjustable wattage features if you're looking for something to level up your vape game!

Most refillable pod vape kits have internal batteries and use replacement pods that normally have the coils preinstalled but some require replacement coils

Mod Vape Kit

Mod vape kits are designed to be used by vapers that have a fair level of experience with vaping as they commonly have more technical features such as temperature control which can be very confusing for a new vaper.

'Mod' refers to the battery part of the vape, and this will house a large internal battery but some may also use external batteries to power the device. They'll also commonly have a vape tank attached to it where the coil is housed.

The Innokin Coolfire Z60 is a great vape mod to buy if you're looking for something more advanced.

Disposable Vape

Disposable vapes have surged in popularity over the last few years here in the UK with an unprecedented amount of adult vapers opting for the disposable vape as their kit of choice.

Whilst these do offer a convenient way to vape, in the way that you don't have to refill or recharge them, they are not a cost effective way to vape nor are they sustainable for the environment.

We would recommend finding an alternative for a disposable vape such as a refillable pod vape kit like the Aspire R1 which is available here at LiQuid.

How Do I Choose The Right Vape Kit?

There are a lot of things within the criteria when it comes to choosing the right vape kit for you. You may be a new vaper looking for your first vape kit after moving away from smoking, you may be a more experienced vaper looking to upgrade to something bigger and better. Or you might just be looking for the best vape kit to take on holiday or the best vape kit for the least money if you're wanting to keep to your budget

Transitioning From Smoking To Vaping - Choosing your first vape kit when quitting smoking and starting vaping is something you absolutely must get right, as this could make or break you having a successful transition away from cigarettes!

You wont need anything overly complicated for your first vape kit, and you'll also want to be replicating the effects of smoking as closely as possible (just without the thousands of harmful chemicals that come with smoking tobacco products!)

The effects people look to replicate is the hand to mouth action as well as the throat hit which is created by the nicotine hitting the back of the throat when inhaling. Therefore a mouth to lung vape device would be the best device for you to use.

What Vape Juice You Want To Use -If you're looking to use vape juice which is mixed at a 50VG/50PG ratio, you'll need a vape kit which uses coils around 0.7ohms or higher, we explain more on this further down in this blog.

If you're looking to use High VG vape juice, you'll want to get a sub-ohm vape kit which can be run at higher wattages so the coil works optimally and produces bigger vape clouds as well as a richer flavour experience.

Fitting Your Budget - If you're wanting to vape on a budget, then look for a vape device that not only suits your needs but also one that suits your budget.

Vaping is much more affordable than smoking, and the initial outlay costs when starting to vape will always be the most expensive part of the process. Once you have bought your vape kit however, providing it's well maintained and looked after, this should last you a long time before you'd need to consider replacing it.

We give a few examples below of what we have on offer here at LiQuid if you're looking to vape on a budget!

What Are Vape Coils & Vape Pods?

What Is A Vape Pod?

Pod vape kits are becoming the more popular vape kit of choice to vapers of all levels of experience. A vape pod will commonly have a coil preinstalled inside the pod, and then factory sealed with the only opening being for refilling it with vape juice.

However, some vape pods will use replacement coils, meaning you keep using the same pod instead of throwing the whole pod away when the coil has burnt out.

What Is A Vape Coil?

Atomizer, wick, burner, the list goes on of different names they're referred to as but ultimately it's just a coil! These are the heating element of any vape device, and it's what heats your e-liquid up to turn into vapour which you inhale and exhale.

They're made up of a small wire coil, wrapped a specific amount of times to give the ohm resistance reading, and then packed with a cotton wick which is where your vape juice absorbs into. The liquid soaked into the wick is then vaporised when the wire heats up as the battery's current passes through it.

How To Maintain Your Vape Kit

It's good practice to ensure that you maintain and look after your vape kit as this will not only keep it running how it should be, but also if you look after your vape kit, it will last you a long period of time without the need to replace it.

Keep It Clean - Ensure that your vape is clean and free of any dust or debris, especially the charging port and also the mouthpiece part of either your vape tank or vape pod. The last thing you want is to have a vape and end up with pocket lint in your mouth as it's clogging up the mouthpiece!

Don't Drop It! - We know accidents happen, but try to avoid dropping your device. If you did happen to drop it, not only can it damage it cosmetically, but it can also cause damage to the internal wirings and components which aren't visible.

Change Your Coil/Pod Frequently - This is probably our top tip for vape kit maintenance and that is to regularly change the coil or pod in your vape kit. This will ensure that your vape is running at optimal levels, and also ensure that your vape juice is rich in flavour as the cotton in the coil will be fresh, just how it should be!

Troubleshooting Common Vape Kit Problems

There could be several different problems that crop up when it comes to using your vape kit, and we've aimed to answer some of the most common vape problems and give you a solution on how to solve any problems that may arise!

Why Is My Vape Not Charging?
This is a common issue and it's quite an easy fix as well. It's important to know how to charge your vape safely and we would always advise to use the charging lead which came with your vape kit.

Make sure the charging port on your vape is clean from any dust or lint, especially if you carry your vape in your pocket or bag frequently. You can give it a gentle blow or use a cotton bud to clean in there and hopefully this will solve the issue!

What Does No Atomizer/Check Atomizer Mean?
If your device has a screen on, you may see "Check Atomizer/No Atomzier" flash up on the screen and you'll likely wonder why your vape is not working

This may mean that your coil needs changing, so it's worth grabbing a new coil or pod, fill it with vape juice and then check to see if the above error message still displays.

It may even be a simple thing like wiping the contact points between your vape device and the base of the pod and then checking to see if the issue is resolved.

Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?
Chances are if you speak to any seasoned vaper, they've experienced a 'burnt hit' at least once in their vaping lifetime. What causes this burnt taste is the cotton in the coil deteriorating and when it's heated up, it's just a burnt cotton taste which will come through instead of the flavour of your vape juice. This is the telltale sign to change your coil or pod and resolve the issue! over the course of regular use, the cotton starts to turn dark and no longer properly absorbs the e-liquid. This causes dry spots throughout it which simply burn when heated.

Which Vape Juice Is Best For My Vape Kit?

You have decided which vape kit you want to go for, but now you may be confused at which vape juice you can use in your device to ensure you get a hitch-free vaping experience.

The general rule of thumb is that if your device uses coils which are a 0.7ohm resistance or higher, you're best to use vape juice which is mixed at a 50VG/50PG ratio. This ensures that it will pass through the cotton of your coil easily enough and be able to be heated properly to turn into vapour.

If you're using a device that has lower ohm coils below 0.6ohm, you'll be fine using High VG vape juice like a 70/30 VGPG ratio. These coils will have more cotton for the thicker vape juice to absorb into. If you were to use a thinner mix like 50/50, you may find that it won't soak into the cotton properly and you may encounter some leakage issues.

What is MTL, DTL & RDTL Vaping & Which Kits Suit Them Best?

We know that this has probably been a lot of information to take in all at once, and we're now going to wrap up this guide with an explanation of the different styles of vaping and what devices to use to ensure you have the best vaping experience possible in exactly the way you want.

Knowing what wattage to vape at is a crucial part of the process, as this will determine what style of vaping you do. There's three different styles of vaping as we explain below;

Mouth-to-Lung.svg__PID:e2fc4f74-50bf-4297-9683-e55405fce2f3

Mouth To Lung (MTL)

This style of vaping is more commonly associated with pen vape kits or pod vape kits. They will be low powered devices that uses a higher ohm resistance coil so that it gives a true mouth to lung vape experience.

Direct-to-Lung.svg__PID:4f7450bf-f297-4683-a554-05fce2f3ae7a

Direct To Lung (DTL)

This style of vaping is most commonly associated with bigger sub-ohm vape kits that are run at higher wattages and use low ohm resistance coils to produce big clouds of vapour. The vapour is inhaled directly to the lungs.

Restricted_Direct_to_Lung.svg__PID:50bff297-5683-4554-85fc-e2f3ae7a92c5

Restricted Direct To Lung (RDTL)

A newer style of vaping which can be done using pod vape kits which use a coil with a resistance of around 0.6/0.7ohm and the airflow is then slightly closed off to restrict the air and create the RDTL effect.
